What leaves do to your lawn while you are not looking.
They smother the grass
A thick mat of wet leaves blocks sunlight from reaching your grass, right when it is still storing up energy for winter. Colorado State University Extension says to avoid leaving leaf litter on your lawn so the grass is not smothered.
They set up snow mold
When snow lands on a layer of leaves, the damp, dark space underneath is where snow mold grows. In spring you find round patches of matted, dead grass. Extension also lists mold and disease as a reason to keep leaves off the lawn.
They give pests a winter home
Voles and grubs look for deep leaf litter to shelter in. Clearing the leaves takes that hiding place away before they settle in.
The payoff shows up in spring
The lawns that look best in May are almost always the ones that were cleaned up in October and November. And going into winter with a tidy yard just looks good, too.
